Venezuela exodus

Venezuelan Displacement Explorer

People recorded outside Venezuela at year-end, 2020 to 2025, by destination. These are stocks, not arrivals: a change between years mixes new arrivals with onward moves, returns, regularisation and revised estimates.

Source: UNHCR persons of concern demographics, as supplied. The extract has no population-type column, so refugees, asylum-seekers and permit holders cannot be separated. Background and citations: Sources.

Trend by country

Change in the recorded stock versus the previous year-end. A drop can be a real exit, a reporting change or a revised estimate.

    About this data
    • Totals are the sum of destination countries listed by UNHCR, excluding the record where Venezuela is its own asylum country.
    • Sex and age are reported for 48% of people in 2020 and 77% in 2025, so demographic shares are not comparable across years.
    • The US 2025 figure is partial: UNHCR footnotes say USCIS data runs January to September and new asylum applications carry no nationality.
    • Guatemala and Honduras swing from tens of thousands to a few thousand within a year, which looks like transit counting or a method change.
    • Colombia 2023 has shifted age bands, so ages 5 to 11 and 12 to 17 are merged into 5 to 17 everywhere.
    • García Arias (2024, p. 668) notes that many Venezuelans now leave the South American countries where they first settled and cross the Darién Gap towards the US border. That fits the Central American and Mexican spikes here, but year-end stocks cannot confirm routes.
    • The same study (pp. 646, 665–666) counts Venezuelan-born people regardless of legal status and warns that people in transit are undercounted. UNHCR figures are recorded persons, so the two are different measures and should not be added together.
